Who we are

Steve, Dave, Roger and myself play 'Coarse' Bridge about once a month. The link between us is that we have all taught at Aldridge School at some point in our teaching careers but all of us are now retired. Has retirement improved our standard of Bridge? No, but it has given Mr Stats more time to do his stuff.

This monthly gathering has been going on since the late '70s and even though I was draughted in in 1982 I'm still the new kid.

    Round 2 - 2017

With the meeting suddenly being switched to Steve’s house there was pressure on the host to perform his duties. This was done admirably (Thanks Pauline) but Steve’s play suffered under the extra pressure. Andy was on fire from the beginning of the evening and achieved a 72% winning score. Rog scored a massive 100% but only played 3 hands all of them “safe” contracts. Dave of course played for his team and played a game contract doubled by his opponents whereupon he achieved a small slam as a result. Magnificent play!

    The results

    Andy “I’m on fire” Baker
    3180 4160
    Rog “I’ll play safe” Osborn
    3000 3000
    Dave “Masterful player” Finch
    630 1800
    Steve “Under pressure” Randall
    0 1380

    Round 3 - 2017

With the pressure on our host (Rog) it became a successful night for Steve. Rog had children staying, grandchildren staying, cat staying and a poorly wife. He then had to produce a meal which was good but the custard had no skin!

Steve has now won two of the three evenings but still remains bottom. His deity is certainly illustrating a lesson to him!

    Round 4 - 2017

At Dave’s house a major innovation took place. Healthy appetisers were provided such as celery and carrot sticks. Steve declared the crisps and nuts to be of fine order. Fresh broccoli could soon be on the next menu!

It was in fact Steve’s night in many ways. He went from ineptness to brilliance back to sheer incompetence.   Failing to count trumps on several occasions. Brilliantly overcalling twice and making a game bid in the process on a separate occasion. To finally allowing himself to play in 2 spades but making a cast iron 6 spades. Poor bidding on his part! But also good play.

The stats are now taking place. The best pairings are Dave and Steve followed by Dave and Andy. Readers may like to analyse the common factor in this particular statistic. Person who has won the most hands is Dave.
